Winter Thunder

The rumbling at midnight
From the thick black roof —
Snow announcing
It's no longer aloof

But determined to smother
In roughhouse affection
Shrub and woodpile,
Shovel and trash can —

The fierce avalanche
Makes me shiver,
Fear that Zeus,
Taker, Giver,

Is not on Olympus
In history dead,
But lives in my attic
Right overhead.
